Self-awareness, Emotional Intelligence and Stress
This article describes the importance of self-awareness and emotional intelligence in stress management and stress relief.
Emotional Self-Awareness – Understanding Yourself
Emotionally aware leaders of large organizations enjoy the following results.
• 87% of these leaders are in the top 1/3 for salary and results
• their divisions are 15-20% more productive and profitable
• Unlike …
• Leaders with low self-awareness who under perform by > 20%
And here is another thought for you - how you feel affects everyone around you. Based on the brain’s limbic system, research proves leaders' moods affect the emotions of the people around them, for example, in 70 work teams across diverse industries, people in meetings together ended up sharing moods -both good and bad - within two hours. The same holds true in the office, boardroom, or shop floor; group members inevitably "catch" feelings from one another. Being self-aware and understanding the impact of others can help you with stress management and stress relief.
Emotional intelligence is intelligence which relates to one's emotions, one's ability to understand one's self and other people and an overall ability to be able to adapt to and cope with the emotional and interpersonal demands of everyday life.
Let us assume that you have a high or very high emotional intelligence. What does that mean? It means that you probably have a fairly high self-esteem, you are probably very happy, you probably maintain good relationships and understand people quite well, you manage life’s stressful events and challenges well and you are probably managing virtually all aspects of your life very comfortably. In terms of stress management and stress relief, you are in a good position to overcome the stressful challenges in your life. Typical ‘self’ questions include:
* Do I know myself well?
* Do I have a positive self regard?
* Do I feel comfortable that I can achieve significant things in my life?
* Do I have the self-assurance to be able to tackle challenging people and situations?
* Do I know my strengths and weaknesses sufficiently well to be able to handle stressful events?
* Do I feel that I have empathy for other people and understand their needs and wants?
* Do I accept a reasonable degree of social responsibility as part of my character?
* Am I flexible when I respond to difficult situations?
* Am I a good problem solver?
* Do I handle complex and emotionally charged problems calmly and competently?
* Am I able to regulate my emotions to achieve a satisfactory outcome?
* Am I a cup half full individual - with a positive expectation that life will be rich and fulfilling?
* Am I a happy and well adjusted person?
I firmly believe self-awareness is the first and most critical step to making the best of our talents and our life opportunities. Not just for managing stress – but for optimizing our life – what Maslow called ‘self-actualization’. Emtional intelligence, self-awareness, and good stress management skills are powerful ingredients in the stress relief recipe.
How actualized is your life?
Best wishes
Dr Jeff
