Testing Your Stress Levels
With new clients I measure their stress levels with a stress test to understand their personal stress levels and their workplace stress levels. Elevated stress can be dangerous and dysfunctional. Knowing something about your stress levels and avoiding workplace stress traps is very important to be productive and happy.
Stress Test
In my book Stress Management by Dr Jeff, I ask you to rate yourself on a 10 item scale. I get people to reflect on how they have felt over the last few weeks and think about how you have felt over the last few weeks and to rate their feelings on this scale: 0 is ‘Hardly ever true of me or not true at all’ and 5 is ‘True of me nearly all of the time’. Their results are compared with my figures on stress. The purpose is to identify the stress levels and then find a way to relieve stress. Then I ask people to identify the 5 ‘things’ (events, situations, people, contexts) that cause them the most stress.
I will now list and explain the different stressors which cause personal stress and workplace stress and which are the focus of my stress test.
Your typical response might be physiological or physical. You start to notice that your body is behaving in an unusual way. You feel tense and on edge all the time. You might feel ill. Your eating and sleeping behaviors are quite different from how you behave normally.
Some people react in a very emotional way. They get anxious, they seem to be on an emotional roller coaster, they grieve and worry all the time or they become withdrawn and unapproachable. So their responses are as follows.
Some people reflect their levels of stress in the way they deal with their colleagues, friends, partners or family. It's almost as if there is a different person in your skin. You become very impatient and brittle in your relationships. People have to walk on egg shells around you. You are not nice to be with. Some people irritable; some people withdraw.

When you test your stress, you begin to understand your own behavior and the impact of your behavior when you are stressed; you can go to your friends and loved ones and enlist their support so that you can learn better ways to relieve stress. Was this stress test helpful? Do you recognize some of your tension points? Was your stress test showing a high level of tension? The more you know about your personal psychology and mental health, the more YOU can take charge of your life.
Why not take charge of your life – now?
Warm regards
Dr Jeff
