Workplace Stress Traps and Managing Work Stress
Stress in the Workplace
One of the major concerns of organizational psychologists, human resource managers and chief executive offices of large and small organizations is the lost productivity and cost of workplace stress. Many research studies report on the huge cost as a result of absenteeism and presenteeism in the workplace.
Absenteeism is when people are absent from work for either genuine or other reasons; presenteeism is when people come to work when they're either physically or psychologically unable to meet their work demands and so they have very diminished productivity. Workplace stress is a major stress trap and one to study and manage.
There are many long lists about why people experienced work-related stress.
• organizational changes
• unfair or excessive workloads
• too much unpaid overtime
• stressful demands an expectations
• duties that do not match individual’s job specification
• work that is boring and are now motivating
• no (or limited) autonomy over the work situation
• job insecurity and threatened redundancy
• inadequate training for the demands of the position
• inadequate, inappropriate or excessive supervision
• inadequate resources to do the job
• inadequate equipment to do the job
• limited career progression
• an inappropriate social culture in the workplace, for example, racist, harassing, discriminatory
• poor relationships with colleagues or bosses
• dramatic events in the workplace, for example, hold-ups
How to Cope in a Workplace Environment that Causes Stress
I have written a number of articles about workplace stress traps and ways to manage workplace stress. My first principle is based on the concepts of self-awareness and emotional intelligence. Knowing yourself leads to more effective stress relief strategies. The second stress management approach is to talk out the problem with a friend who is not involved in the incident. Sometimes we lose perspective and we turn an annoying niggle into a full blown stress episode. Thirdly, we need to learn how to eliminate negative self-talk. This kind of dysfunctional thinking elevates stress and does nothing to manage stress. There are many other strategies I describe in my book Stress Management by Dr Jeff and in my articles.
Please enjoy my ideas and stress management tips and enjoy your life.
